The Messerschmitt BF 109 was a German fighter aircraft. It was first deployed during the Spanish Civil War in 1937 and was in use by the German Luftwaffe and its allies during World War II. When first deployed, the aircraft was one of the most advanced aircraft in the world. The aircraft had a monocoque construction made entirely of metal, retractable landing gear and a closed cockpit. With about 34,000 aircraft produced, the BF 109 is the most produced fighter aircraft ever.

The Messerschmitt BF 109 was designed in the 1930s by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser at the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. The aircraft was originally intended as an interceptor aircraft, but later models could also perform other tasks, such as escort fighter, fighter-bomber, night fighter, ground attack aircraft or reconnaissance aircraft.
